Residents have their private practice clinic in one of four family medicine clinics:
South Providence Family Medicine Clinic
In January 2015, we celebrated the grand opening of our two story, 85,000 square foot facility at South Providence Medical Park (SPMP). Located six miles south campus, this modern, state of the art clinic has been designed for the future of family medicine and the continued progression of the collaborative care model within the patient centered medical home. Family Medicine at SPMP is team based, including nurses, care managers, and physician assistants, and it incorporates social work, nutritional, behavioral health, and anti-coagulation monitoring services – in addition to the primary care services offered by our family physicians. Each team of family physicians, nurses, care managers, learners, and other providers at SPMP share one large, open, work space, rather than private offices. This open space design improves communications and collaborations among team members, and warm hand-offs of patients at the time of their visit. It prepares students and family medicine residents for real world practice by allowing them to see and participate in the team-based model of care. In addition to family medicine, SPMP is home to outpatient general pediatrics and adult psychiatric care clinics. Other services offered at the building include drive-through pharmacy, urgent care, lab, and radiology.
Family Medicine-Callaway Physicians
Callaway Physicians is in Fulton, a community of 13,000 located 25 miles east of Columbia. This rural practice provides comprehensive and continuing health care to a large and diverse patient population. While this clinic is located in a rural community, patients and physicians have access to Callaway Community Hospital, which is located across the street from clinic.
Fayette Medical Clinic is in Fayette, a town of 2,800 located 30 miles northwest of Columbia. This rural practice provides a wide spectrum of family medicine services. Residents gain valuable experience in Fayette, understanding the importance of a rural clinic with no hospital in town.
Family Health Center
Family Health Center is a federally funded community health center established to expand primary care services to uninsured and underinsured patients in the Columbia area. Residents provide medical and social care to this diverse set of patients, including a significant number of expectant mothers and Spanish-speaking patients.
Residents train at two area facilities:
University Hospital is a 274-bed hospital that offers a wide range of services, and is the only level I trauma center in Mid-Missouri. Within the hospital, our residents also work in the Emergency Room, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), and on our Family Medicine inpatient service as well as the Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine consult services.
Women's and Children's Hospital
MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a 189-bed MU Health Care hospital, is located in east Columbia. This houses the newly built Family Birthing Center where our obstetric service is located. We also care for pediatric patients at the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
