The School of Medicine offers several summer programs/fellowships for MU’s first-year/rising second-year medical students. The experiences last between four and ten weeks. Research and clinical opportunities are both available. Positions are competitive and limited.
Application Process
Only MU students who are in their first year of medical school can apply for these positions.
For Clinical and Med Ed Summer Positions-
The first round of the Clinical and Med Ed Summer Program application opens on February 2nd and closes on March 6th.
After reviewing all the positions (links above), decide which is your first choice and complete/submit the application (link to application can be found on the home page of the website). Please only apply for one Clinical or Med Ed Summer Program position in the 1st round. Program coordinators will contact applicants with their hiring decisions for the 1st round the week of March 9th.
The second round of the Clinical and Med Ed Summer Program application opens on March 16th and closes on March 27th.
Starting March 16th students will be able to apply for any open and/or second positions. Only those positions with availability will still have an option on the application. No option means no position available. Program coordinators will make applicants aware of their hiring decisions for the 2nd round the week of March 30th.
Application for Clinical and Med Ed Programs Only (Summer Research application link found on their page.)
For Summer Research Fellowship Positions-
The Summer Research Fellowship application will open February 2nd and close March 20th. It does not have rounds and you can apply for this program along with any Clinical and Med Ed Program. Spots for Summer Research are limited as well. Applicants will be notified of acceptance after March 20th. For any specific Research questions, please reach out to Office of Medical Research Education.
Before accepting any second position, please work with the coordinators of both positions to make sure the work schedules do not overlap.

- January 30, 2026 - Summer Programs Class Meeting, 12-1 pm via ZOOM
- February 2, 2026 - Clinical and Med Ed Program applications open
- February 2, 2026 - Summer Research Fellowship application opens
- March 6, 2026 - Last day to apply for a Clinical and Med Ed Program for the 1st round
- Week of March 9, 2026 - Program coordinators of Clinical and Med Ed Programs contact applicants with their first round of hiring decisions
- March 16, 2026 - The application for the second round of Clinical and Med Ed positions opens. Same application link - only departments with open positions will still be listed
- March 20, 2026 - Summer Research Fellowship application closes
- After March 20, 2026 - Program Coordinators of the Summer Research Fellowship will notify applicants of acceptance.
- March 27, 2026 - Last day to apply for a Clinical and Med Ed Program for the 2nd round
- Week of March 30, 2026 - Program coordinators of Clinical and Med Ed programs contact applicants with their second round of hiring decisions
Important Additional Information:
MU medical students have MU liability coverage for educational activities while registered in courses that are officially recognized by the medical school as training experiences, including the summer fellowship courses without credit.
If you are required to remediate an exam over the summer, that will take priority over securing a Summer Program.
